Science and technology is mandatory for all students from Kindergarten to Year 6.
In science and technology, students explore the natural and made worlds. They learn how to apply scientific and technological skills, knowledge and understanding across a broad range of contexts.
Science provides a way of inquiring about the world around us. It explores evidence and investigates ways to discover, develop and produce solutions to real world problems. The inquiry and skill-based nature of science opens doors to ideas and discoveries.
Science and Technology K–6 is an integrated discipline that fosters in students a sense of wonder
and curiosity about the world around them and how it works. Science and Technology K–6
encourages students to embrace new concepts, the unexpected and to learn through trialling, testing
and refining ideas. At Caringbah we provide a comprehensive STEM (science technology engineering mathematics) across K-6.

STEM in the Garden
Our school's K-6 STEM program template is based around Sustainability and our school garden. This is an integrated curriculum approach which integrates the New K-6 Science and Technology Syllabus with STEM projects.
Students will develop an understanding about the relationship between human activities and natural systems, as well as sustainable management of Earth's resources. Through the garden projects, students will also develop a deep knowledge of the inter-related nature of processes in their natural environment. Caringbah PS aims to promote the development of knowledge, values, attitudes and behaviours in students that supports environmental sustainability.
Led by Elissa Lawrence, Caringbah PS has several established sustainability and permaculture programs, utilising the garden as a curriculum resource, in the form of various garden projects including
- ECO Warriors- One representatives from each class each term.
- Nude Food Initiative- Classes monitor the amount of food with packaging and try to reduce each week.
- Compost Crew- Collection of student food scraps- Run by the Eco Warriors.
- Farmer’s Market- Students sell Worm Juice and produce from the garden. They also use the school kitchen to make food utilising garden ingredients.
- Chicken Coop cared for by K-2 Autism Class.
- Paper Recycling- Paper collection from classrooms by stage 3 representatives.
